Why the supersite?

The Hadsten supersite will help AgNUE build on Denmark’s existing SmartField infrastructure under commercial agricultural conditions in central Jutland. As an established SmartField site, Hadsten contributes to high-resolution monitoring of nitrogen dynamics, greenhouse gas fluxes and mitigation strategies. The site is important because it gives AgNUE a second Danish comparison point and helps connect local field observations with the project’s broader data repository and modelling framework.

What this site helps AgNUE compare

Paired with the Foulum supersite, Selling enables AgNUE to compare nitrogen use and losses across two representative Danish cropping systems. Selling represents plant production on a heavier sandy clay loam soil supplied primarily with mineral fertiliser, while Foulum represents feed production on a lighter soil receiving slurry and digestate. The comparison will show how soil type, crop rotation and fertiliser source affect nitrogen-use efficiency, nitrous oxide emissions and nitrate leaching under Danish conditions.

The site is located on sandy clay loam soil classified as JB6, representing the heavier mineral soils used for intensive plant production in Denmark.

Mineral fertiliser is applied according to Danish standards, providing a reference system for testing improved fertiliser products, application strategies and mitigation measures.

The five year rotation includes spring barley, winter wheat with cover crops and oilseed rape, representing an important Danish plant-production system.

As an existing SmartField supersite, Selling combines continuous chamber and field scale measurements with soil sensors, leaching measurements, crop observations and advanced modelling to quantify the complete nitrogen balance.
