Why the supersite?

The Finland supersite will help AgNUE study nitrogen cycling under northern agricultural conditions at the SMEAR-Agri measurement station in Helsinki. The site includes drained soils with relatively high organic carbon content and mildly acidic pH, and is mainly managed with silage grass renewed through crop rotation. Its existing measurement infrastructure and adjacent long-term biochar experiment make it a valuable site for comparing fertiliser types, inhibitors, biochar treatments and northern European cropping systems.

What this site helps AgNUE compare

This site gives AgNUE a setting to compare nitrogen management in intensive arable farming under the specific soil and climate conditions of northern France. Building on existing ICOS and long-term experimental infrastructure, it helps assess how fertilisation, tillage, residue management and legume-based nitrogen replacement influence nitrogen dynamics across cropping systems.

Represents intensive crop production in northern France, including major crops such as wheat, maize, barley, oilseed rape, sugar beet and pea.

Supports comparison of conventional and alternative nitrogen management strategies under high-yielding arable conditions.

Provides a relevant setting for studying systems where mineral nitrogen inputs are partly replaced by nitrogen from symbiotic fixation.

Builds on existing ICOS and long-term experimental infrastructure, supporting robust comparison across years and sites.
